Overview: Iron-Backup is a multi-platform backup scheduling system which is comprised of a console software package written in Java/C++, and a group of service/daemons to be run on various servers or workstations which provide the backup services. It is a complete backup system that permits you to do full/incremental/differential backups not only on a single computer, but you can actually backup data from one computer across the network to a destination computer, even crossing platform boundaries. The system allows scheduling of backups in great detail from recurring once a year to recurring every 5 minutes if you wanted.
Iron-Backup Capabilities: This product provides a Java based GUI console that can operate on most any platform that supports Java 1.4 and can connect to your network. A tree-view for managing a potentially world-wide network can be constructed by adding WAN/LAN containers to the tree and then adding Servers/Workstations under those containers. You can then click and select the source computer that you want to backup, and then a backup window appears for that computer giving you robust backup options. Tree-view Network Console: The Iron-Backup console provides the ability to click and add tree items in a GUI, you can add WAN/LAN container items which in turn can contain Server/Workstation items. You should set the host address for each Server/Workstation in the tree and by doing so you can easily connect to them with just a password and a couple clicks. Similarly a duplicate tree is provided when selecting a destination computer for a backup operation. Backup Data Selection: When you open a backup window for a given server/workstation that you wish to create a backup on, you are given a two-pane window. On the left you are given a tree-view of the computers filesystem and you can start selecting directories. You have the ability to create directories and mount filesystems without actually engaging a backup. Target Backup Computer/Device: On the right pane of the backup window you simply select one computer in the tree-view of your WAN/LAN world network, that will be the destination of the backup, and when you engage scheduling of the backup you can specify a target device for the backup data on the destination computer. Backup Scheduling: In the backup window for a given server/workstation you click a tool-bar button to schedule and engage a backup. You can also click Backup-now for a one time backup without specifying times/dates. First however you must have selected at least one directory to be backed up, and you must have selected the target computer for the backup destination. If you have done these things then you can set the following scheduling: selection of any of 12 months of the year, selection of any of 7 days of the week or selection of specific days-of-month, selection of specific times of the 24 hour day. After you select some of these things, and not all are required, you must then specify the target device or directory on the destination computer, also you can specify that you want the backup job to run at a low priority. After selecting these things you click Engage Backup and your done. Other Features: You can specify notification for when a backup fails. You can give email addresses and even specify cellular tel-numbers for text-messages, notifying you of the status of completed or failed backups.
System Compatibility: The Iron-Backup console (based on Java) is compatible with most all OS and computer architectures, provided they have a Java VM 1.4 or later installed. The Iron-Backup console provides backup management of other network computers, it is not a server component. Here is a list of some of the compatible systems:
Iron-Backup services/daemons provide the backup services for any server or workstation that you schedule through the Iron-Backup console. The computer must have Java JRE 1.4 or later installed. The following servers are supported:
